A world of vehicles designed to spark children's imagination

Context

Kakao Mobility is one of South Korea's leading mobility service providers, operating across taxi services, future UAM ventures, and beyond. This project was created for Jobworld, an experiential exhibition space, with its primary audience in mind: children aged five to ten. The content was shaped around that age group throughout. My core contribution to the project was taking Kakao Mobility's existing 2D service icons as a starting point and rebuilding them as fully realised 3D models.

3D Mobility Design

This project involved bringing Kakao Mobility's vehicles into three dimensions, giving physical form to what had previously existed only as 2D icons. The work remained faithful to the visual language of the existing icons, which carry Kakao Mobility's brand vision, while introducing friendly shapes, playful patterns, and lively animations designed to capture children's imagination.
Drawing on Kakao Mobility's service icon library, we selected ten vehicle types and developed them as 3D models optimised for a game environment. The aim was to reflect the full breadth of mobility by balancing ground, air, and water-based vehicles in appropriate proportion. The final selection of ten types comprises: taxi, rental car, train, bicycle, spaceship, aeroplane, motorbike, UAM, hot air balloon, and yacht. Each vehicle can be customised by combining nine primary colours, eight secondary colours, nine sticker designs, and ten booster effect options, producing a total of 64,800 unique vehicle combinations.

Shader & Material Optimisation

To allow full customisation of the in-house 3D vehicles, a dual UV map system was applied to each model. One UV map handles the base textures specific to each vehicle, including Roughness, Metallic, and Normal Maps, while the other is used to apply one of nine sticker patterns. The two maps are then combined into a single material via a custom shader. This approach made it possible to build an optimised system that maintains strong in-game performance without compromising visual quality.
